and I study biology, chemistry, medical philosophy, and writing
Career
Pathology interests me because this field joins medicine and research in a way that centers patient care. When I first came to Pitt, I thought I wanted to be a research biologist and did not consider medical school a necessary next step after graduating; however, a positive experience shadowing a pathologist lead me to consider medical school. I began volunteering at UPMC Shadyside and realized first hand that the difference between being a doctor and being a researcher is this: researchers serve a hypothesis while doctors serve a person. While both provide meaninful service and solutions to the world, I want to treat a patient, not their disease.
Family and Home
My family contains anyone who has been in my life long enough and regularly enough to provide positive impact and change. The people pictured above have all shaped me into who I am today in one way or another. I consider home to be wherever I am surrounded by the people who support me most in life. I do not consider home to be a stationary place, so I can feel "at home" in any place as long as my support system is by my side.
Entertainment
I use media everyday-- mostly in the form of music. If I am walking to class or work alone, I am never without my airpods and Spotify playlists. Music is one of my constant companions, always available to brighten a dull moment or fill a silence. My music taste helped me meet my closest friends, and is something we continue to bond over.
Community
I am part of many different communities in Pittsburgh. Mainly, I find community in my research lab, the undergraduate chemical stockroom in Chevron, and the hospital where I volunteer. These groups of people are made up of my peers, colleagues, and bosses, which makes for spaces where everyone has a different life experience to share.
School
Pitt has opened doors for me to explore multiple different areas of interest. In my first year, I did not think I would be anything more than a biology major. Now, I am minoring in chem, and completing certificates in the conceptual foundations of medicine, and public and professional writing. I've also gotten to explore creative endeavors, and have since gotten into 3D modeling and printing after taking a Critical Making class here at Pitt. Education has allowed me to explore my interests, and the knowledge I've gained will help me to become the most well rounded person I can be-- a trait that I hope to transfer into my medical school studies someday.
